BruinTech Seminar Educates Audience on Copyright Issues

copyright seminar presentersThis past BruinTech seminar, "Copyright, Jail & You," addressed how some important copyright issues such as software piracy and file trading affect UCLA faculty, staff and students. The seminar featured a short legal background on copyright by Professor Stuart Biegel of the UCLA School of Law and Graduate School of Education and Information Studies followed by a longer talk from Kent Wada, UCLA IT Security & Policy Coordinator.

Wada addressed the growing number of people being tracked down and exposed to their Internet Service Providers (ISP), by cyber 'bounty hunters'. Wada also addressed the need for departments and individual users to be conscious of the uses allowed by purchasing agreements and warned that organizations like the Business Software Alliance agressively pursue all infractions, no matter how small.

Wada has previously given this talk and has made some valuable links available for those interested in reading more on copyright.
