UCLA takes home a prized Sautter Award!

Now in its sixth year, the Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in IT is a UC system-wide recognition of excellence. There were a record number of submissions this years in the two categories: The Golden Award for Innovation in IT and the Silver Award for Achievement in University Computing. Winners were announced at this year's UCCSC Conference in San Diego.

This year, a collaborative project between CLICC [College Library Instructional Computing Commons] and the Library won a silver award for MALCOM or Mostly Automated Laptop Check Out Machine. These are touchscreen kiosks at five library circulation desks which allow users to initiate the laptopcheck out or check in processes. Once a user is authenticated, library staff complete the transaction and check out the laptop to the student, as if it were a 'big, fancy book'.

The benefits of the program, available since Fall 2005, are in simplicity and efficiency. As the system is easier to use, the process is integrated into each library's circulation desk services, eliminating the need for a CLICC student consultant to staff each lending desk. Streamlining the process makes check out faster, plus the system is connected to CLICC's internal tracking systems. CLICC staff with access to these tracking systems are a phone call away, and available to answer questions from staff or students.
